Project Overview
Promoting high sustainability goals, the new Velindre Cancer Centre will be a modern building that represents a major step forward for healthcare in the United Kingdom. Specifically conceived to maximise the use of local natural materials with reduced carbon footprints, its design promotes a healing environment for patients, families and staff.
The most advanced medical technologies in the treatment of cancer are combined with the aim of preserving the surrounding landscape and keeping it as wild as possible.
Vision
The Acorn vision was to create a cancer centre which will have the strength to last for the long term, promote excellence in cancer services, and to support international research and development. Its aim is to make Wales a world leader in the field of cancer treatment.
Developing a new centre of excellence has been an exciting journey for Acorn. We aim to construct a cancer centre aligned with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, providing one of the most sustainable cancer centres in the UK.
Masterplan Details
ACORN's strategy for the landscape is to 'keep it wild'. Many exciting new spaces will be created, from the Welsh apple tree orchard and community kitchen garden to informal play areas, along with lots of places to walk, cycle and relax. Existing habitats are preserved, with new areas of highly biodiverse wildflower meadow.
Milestones
Our design has been developed to ensure that it has the minimum impact on the site and that it provides a practical healing space, elegant in nature, in which patients, staff and members of the community can embrace everything the project has to offer.
The broad floors, the generous ceiling heights and the discreet sophistication of the servicing solutions will facilitate a wide range of cancer services for decades to come. The architectural form of the building is intended to inspire through its clarity of expression, the scale of its internal spaces and the way in which natural light penetrates to the centre of the building.
The project is also about providing benefits to the community and we are working hard to develop many exciting contributions such as apprenticeships, training, engagement with local business and partnership working.
